Artist statement

The narrative for the artwork is derived from the historical detail that the traditional owners of the land, Boon Wurrung people, held their Corroborees on full and new moons on the site that is now South Melbourne Town Hall. The Artist, Mitch Mahoney, has interpreted the significance of the site, shown as the centrepiece, and its connection to the landscape and flora and fauna stretching from Porth Phillip Bay to the Dandenong’s. Mitch has drawn the story of his ancestors on 3 different panels representing Possum Cloaks to represent the identify of the place, telling their story of their how life for millennials has been tightly intervened and shaped by many of the natural resources that still can be found in the area today.

Design Development

The hand drawn design by Mitch Mahoney was scanned and digitalised by The Blueprint. The artwork panels were engineered in steel to act as thin elegant canopy facing the street at Palmerston Crescent, South Melbourne. The artwork was then painted in two layers, to the underside of the the canopy using computer cut stencils of the intricate artwork, the paint used was Dulux Electro Anodised Range to allow illumination to highlight the artwork without being too reflective.
